Do you feel a bit lost when it comes to goal setting? For many years I really had no idea how to set goals and track them and I didn’t understand why it was important anyway. No one had shown me, and I hadn’t taken the time to learn how to effectively use goal setting strategies in my life.

I was making a big mistake and I didn’t even realize it. I approached each day without a clear direction of what I was trying to do. Yes, I was organized but not on the right track. Without a specific destination, I was just really efficient at not getting where I really needed to be.

Getting really organized with both projects and goal setting has allowed me to do 2x as much in ½ the time and be 4x more profitable with my biz goals.

Why does goal setting work?

Let’s review….

Goals Trigger Behavior

Setting goals, action steps and following a plan creates a routine for your day, week etc. that is easy to follow. You get to choose what to focus on and the action steps needed to get you to your goals and then match your behaviors to what will work to achieve your goals. This provides a very actionable framework for you to be successful within and a great way to avoid temptations and distractions.

Goal Setting Aligns Focus, Provides Clarity and Direction With Decision Making

The act of setting a goal gives you a clear focus on an end result. Your actions and decision making will then need to support that goal. Tracking progress and seeing what works and what doesn’t give you real time feedback for how to adjust in order to be successful. Looking at your goals also allows you to make optimal use of your resources when planning for your biz, family and personal life.

Gives You A Sense Of Purpose In Life And Assists In Overcoming Procrastination

When you choose the priorities in your life, you are much more likely to be engaged and focused on successful outcomes. And much less likely to procrastinate. Working on goals feels good. It is a very connected and action orientated mindset that encourages personal achievement.

Reduces Stress & Enjoy More Peace of Mind

In the beginning, setting goals reduces stress because you get to take ideas and expectations out of your brain and put them onto a digital or paper setting. Then you can examine priorities etc and see what you need to do, want to do and have to do. Often times just removing these things from your mental space will reduce stress.

Then you are able to work through your action steps and not worry about what is or isn’t getting done. It has already been laid out and you are working on what is important.

If you are not able to achieve your goal, you are able to learn from the experience. Then either try again or move on. Either way you have gained valuable knowledge.

When you do achieve your goals, it is a time of celebration and accomplishment. A great reason to rest, relax and feel good.  There very few better ways to reduce stress than to achieve a goal.

Provides Motivation

Knowing WHY you are doing something give you added motivation to actually do it. If you are engaged in the outcome then you are much more likely to want to get there quicker. It is when we don’t care so much about the outcome that it is difficult to work hard for it.

Setting goals provides us with the motivation to achieve them. We know ‘what’s in it for us’ and are excited for our reward.

Goals Sustain Momentum

Boy is it easy to give up when things get difficult, and nothing worth achieving will ever be easy. This means we will have to work for our goals. Maybe not hard work and maybe not all the time but rest assured, we will have to work.

Setting goals gives us the bigger picture not only of why we are doing what we are doing but we also know what we gave up to do this particular thing. And we agreed to it ahead of time. This makes it much easier to dig in, work hard when we need to and sustain our momentum in order to achieve our goals.

Makes you Accountable

Writing something down makes it real. When we write out our goals, it triggers an accountability for us to work on them. It’s much easier to think of things we want to do in our head than it is to write out these same things and come up with a plan for achieving them. Staying focused on an end result is almost impossible if we don’t clearly define what that end result is.

It’s Easier To Measure What You Do

Today’s world is so fast paced and focuses on what’s happening RIGHT NOW. It’s easy to get caught up in the flash and hype and feel bad about what you don’t have, in the moment.

Setting goals allows us to work on short, mid and long term accomplishments AND to celebrate ourselves during the process and also when we achieve them. If no one is tracking anything then it is easy to feel like we never do anything. Or never get things done.

It is critical to measure our goals, progress and achievements. We learn from it all. Good, bad and ugly. But if we aren’t tracking and paying attention some of these lessons might just go right on past us.

Better Time Management

Knowing what we are working on at all times immediately helps us stay focused and use our time most effectively. Especially if we have ‘free time for me time’ worked into our schedule…..

Sets Boundaries

Without a plan, it’s easy to get sucked into activities that don’t support your goals. If your schedule is planned and you believe in your goals, it isn’t difficult to say no to the things, people and situations that don’t support your plan.

You End Up With More Control Of Your Life And Your Future

Looking ahead and planning what you want for your life will ultimately give you much more control over the outcome. You will know what you want to achieve and also be focused on what needs to be done to be successful.

More Freedom Of Thought

Ironically enough, the more you plan ahead the more freedom you have. Think about it. When you plan out what you want and need to do, it is you who is choosing. You might not ‘like’ everything you have to do but if you make a plan then you are in charge.

Then you get to decide how to achieve your goals. In the process you are free to imagine the variety of ways to do this.

Gives You A Sense Of Personal Satisfaction/Achievement And Promotes Self Mastery

Counting ‘wins’ is a great way to grow your self-confidence. Each goal you achieve is a win. Each lesson you learned from a goal that wasn’t achieved is a win. Working through the goal setting process is a win. You feel more connected to everyday efforts and accomplishments.

Makes Communication With Others Easier

When you are clear on what you are doing, it is much easier to communicate purpose, direction and details to others. They know what you are working on and why. This helps to avoid misunderstandings and crossed signals.

Goal setting helps you achieve success in your life and it also helps you avoid getting overwhelmed and not having enough time to get things done. Without a clear plan it is easy to get distracted and waste time.

The good news is, goal setting is actually quick and easy to do. You can do it on paper or on your computer or in any number of ways. The important part is to make it simple and easy so you are more likely to stick with it.

When I mention goal setting, what’s the first thing you think of? Do you think OMG how would I even do that? Or do you think ‘oh yeah, I love my goal setting routine’?
